Just as cleanliness is essential for a healthy life, proper cleaning of hearing aids is essential for optimal hearing and to keep them functioning properly for a longer period of time. Ear wax, environmental humidity or excessive sweating are elements that can affect the performance of hearing aids.
In-ear headphones are the most widespread. They are very small and light, are very comfortable to wear in the ear and can be carried comfortably. The problem is that, when placed in the ear canal, they are in direct contact with ear secretions and are also a magnet for other types of dirt.
For this reason, it is very important to clean them regularly, otherwise they are very dirty and sticky, and it is not hygienic to use them. If you use them daily, clean them at least once a week to ensure that they are in good condition.
But how do you clean your headphones without damaging them? Take note of these homemade tricks to remove dirt easily.
The first thing to keep in mind is that you can’t submerge your headphones in water (unless it’s a certified model that allows submersion). They may be resistant to splashes and rain, but if you put them under water they will break.
You can do a quick cleaning, you can wipe them with a disinfectant wipe based on isopropyl alcohol (on Amazon you have alternatives for 6 euros) or a microfiber cloth dampened with alcohol.
As we said, it is advisable to clean them thoroughly at least once a week if you use them frequently. This way you will be able to remove earwax and other particles that may have stuck to them.
To do this, remove the silicone pads (if present) and immerse them in a bowl of warm water with a few drops of dishwashing soap. Let them soak for half an hour, swab them with a cotton swab to remove any dirt that may have stuck to them, rinse them and dry them with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
Next, use a soft, clean, dry toothbrush to gently scrub the microphone and speaker grills of each earpiece. It is recommended that you hold the earpiece upside down and rub it over the brush, as this will allow the dirt to fall out and not get trapped inside.
Once this is done, moisten a cotton swab with alcohol and gently rub the grilles to disinfect them. Do not get it too wet, as if moisture gets inside the headphones, they will be damaged.
Finally, clean and disinfect the outside with a disinfectant wipe or a microfiber cloth dampened with alcohol.
